Simulation study on damage behaviour of partially filled fuel tank subjected to reactive core projectile impact

Abstract Based on the structure of traditional small caliber APDS (Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot), a novel reactive core projectile (RCP) is proposed to improve damage capability against fuel tank. The penetration processes RCPs impacting partially filled tanks with different angles are investigated by numerical simulation, in which Powder Burn model adopted describe unique impact-induced delayed deflagration behaviour material. simulation results show that, compared inert projectile, RCP not only releases additional chemical energy during process, but also increases proportion kinetic transferred surrounding fuel, resulting enhanced Moreover, effect significantly influenced angle, and relatively angle beneficial effect. verify time sequenced combined mechanism RCP, provides reference for design APDS.
